Beyond Awareness promises to bring fresh questions to the understanding of Transitioning Communities, Gender Justice and Our Trans Neighbors. This workshop is for congregation members, leaders, ministers, religious educators, youth, and friends. Registration is by congregation teams, so register for as many as you like.
Whether you are new to these conversations or an old hand you are welcome at this day of education that will range from colonial history to current event, health care to human right, national issues and small-scale kindness.
Together, with courage and honesty, we can uplift our community as one that stands for the dignity and worth of all people.
Elena R. Vera, the presenter, is an internationally-recognized writer and preacher on interfaith social justice work. A founding member of both the Transgender Roundtable at the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies and the Speak! Radical Women of Color Media Collective, she co-curates the popular San Francisco performance series “Girl Talk,” an exploration of the lives of trans women in queer women’s communities, and tours nationwide as a spoken-word artist and educator. Combining a deep grounding in historical scholarship with a compassionate approach to the needs of people with complex lives at the intersections of race, gender, class, orientation, nation, and much more, Ms. Vera has found her work featured everywhere from law school classrooms to protest marches. Originally from rural Oregon, she is currently pursuing Unitarian Universalist ordination at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, California, and dreams of returning to the Pacific Northwest.
