PNWD grieves with the loved ones of Dr. Janis Elliot, long time PNWD and UUA leader, who died in Portland, OR, on July 18. Her life will be remembered and celebrated at First Unitarian Church of Portland on Sunday, 7/31. The  memorial service will begin at 2:00 PM.

Janis was an active member of the UU Church in Eugene prior to joining First Church in Portland, where she is a past Moderator. She devoted her professional career to addressing the needs of abused children and abusive families, community based mental health services and early childhood care and education. Janis’ obituary and tributes are posted at the funeral home website, and journal entries and tributes can also be found at Caring Bridge.

Janis recently served PNWD as our Safe Congregations consultant, and held many leadership positions in the District over the years, including PNWD president in 1987 & 88. Janis was a national UU leader as well, chairing the UUA Commission on Appraisal and serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of Meadville-Lombard Theological School, among other roles.

We send our deepest condolences to Janis’ children and family, and to her partner of 24 years, the Rev. Patti Pomerantz.
